(Interview Answers by Chase Stain - Bassist & Co-Vocalist of Numbers On Napkins)
1. When is the new album coming out, and how do you guys feel about the new CD?
Well, we were hoping to have the new album in stores the summer of 2007, or at least by early 2008, although we are still waiting on a response from Joe Queer, and now we have a few decent offers from various labels to consider as well. If Joe feels that the album is ready to edit and mix, it is possible that it will still be out by early 2008. We should start negotiations with the labels in a couple of weeks, just waiting for our lawyer to make some changes to the offer and present our counter offer, and I guess we'll see where that takes us. So right now we aren't confirming and exact date. We are all really happy and excited about the new CD. I remember in the studio, we couldn't stop laughing about the fact that each song sounds different from the last, so it will be very interesting to see how our fans react to this album.
2. What was it like working with Joe Queer?
We approached Joe to help produce the album a few months after performing with The Queers in Tempe, Arizona. I think he genuinely liked us and jumped at the chance to help us out. He is really one of the nicest guys we have ever had the pleasure to work and perform with. Keep in mind, Joe has his own band that is on the road for like 9 or 10 months out of the year. He doesn't have a lot of free time to help out that much, so it was really nice of him to do it. Because he had such a hectic schedule, he has only been in the studio with us once. We basically email him copies of the songs and he gives us his opinions on how to improve the song. Like if you doesn't like the guitar distortion on a track, he'll tell us to try using a distortion with more fuzz, or if he doesn't like the way the vocalist delivers a line, he'll explain a new way to try it, just stuff like that. So we try our best to fix it until he finally tells us that the track is done. In the end, I think Joe is the coolest guy in the universe.
3. What's the first single?
"Forget This, I'm Going to Tokyo". We just shot a video for it, and so far people have given us a positive response for the most part.
4. Rumors have been popping up about you guys signing a contract with a major label. I've heard that you guys have been in talks with Capitol, Atlantic, and a few others. So are you guys signed or will you be signing to a major label in the near future?
(Laughter) Oh man, news travels fast! I love rumors. Well, we have been contacted by a few A & R reps that aren't really major labels, but their parent companies are actually major labels that you mentioned. Actually, we are in talks with some independent labels, and a couple major labels too, but unless a lot of the contracts can be changed, I doubt we would sign to any of the major labels. You know what, I actually just remembered that I'm not supposed to discuss any of this! (Laughter) So nevermind.....ummmmm... yeah, those crazy rumors... I can't say anything about anything right now.
5. What was the best show you have ever played?
I can't speak for the guys, but there are a few shows that stick out above the rest. Both times that we opened for The Queers was a good time, especially last time because Toys That Kill played with us and I've known Todd forever because he owns Recess Records and I own Bad Stain Records and we have just worked together in the past. So it was awesome seeing Todd and hanging out, drinking, playing frisbee, and partying together for the first time in years. I also really love every time we play with Authority Zero, because those guys are just super cool and nice guys. Plus they can seriously put on one hell of a show! I'm also a huge sucker for house parties. We played this Halloween party that will forever be tattooed on my brain.
6. What are the band's strong and weak points?
Overall I think that's the same answer. I think our strongest point is our diversity, but that's also our weak point. If that makes any sense. But everyone in the band has strong and weak points. We all right music and lyrics, so nobody can take full credit for that. Like in my opinion, my strong point is my overall management of the band. Although my weak point is that sometimes I'll make a quick decision that I think is best for the band without consulting them, because I guess sometimes I think I know what's best. I'm super familiar with the business because I own Bad Stain Records, plus my booking agency and management company Laundromat Productions, But I'm not always right, and I've screwed things up on occasion, and the guys have got upset with me for not consulting them first, because we are a band, and they are right. I should consult them before making a decision. Moe is the socialite of the band. He's great at going to various shows and showing support to other local bands, and gets our name out there. Although he sometimes can have a short fuse when he gets too many beers in him, and that can sometimes cause some issues. Tad is the talent of the band. Without him we would just be an average band. He just brings energy to the band, and his skills are so important. A good drummer is the most vital component of a band, and Tad is one of the best in the entire industry as far as I'm concerned. His only weakness may be his overall easy going attitude, and really, how bad is that! Matt is really good at taking a good song and polishing it up and adding something that makes it amazing. He does just tell it like it is though, with both the band members and fans, which can upset some people....and his unwillingness to play shows sometimes.....and he never drives to shows, and doesn't want to use his own equipment....and don't get me started on his laziness to clear the stage after we finish our set in a timely manner.....ohhhh, and he never picks up the bar tab and asks us to pay for his drinks.... man, what a douchebag! (laughter) No, I'm just kidding. I love everyone in the band, and we are like brothers.
7. Well, I had a different question for number 7, but now I'm gonna change it. What does the future of NON look like? Will Matt continue in the band, or are you thinking of replacing him?
(Laughter) Oh god, Did I come off serious? I just couldn't think of a weak point for Matt. (Laughter) But in all honesty, we all get on each others nerves. Like I said, we are all like brothers. We have all got upset with each other at different times, and sometimes we have talked about replacing any one of us....including myself! But it's more like we are just venting to each other. But we have no intentions of getting rid of Matt, or anyone in the band. We are like family, and each of us have invested a lot into this band, and to take that away from any of us would be extremely hurtful, and we wouldn't do that. I understand that I came off like I'm upset at Matt, and who knows, maybe on some level I am frustrated with him right now, and it's just coming out. But that's okay, cuz he'll probably be pissed at me when he reads this article! (Laughter) One other weakness I have is that I don't tend to discuss problems with people. It's important to discuss the problem and work through it, but that's just not me. Probably why my marriage didn't work out and every relationship goes to hell. (Laughter) But does anyone want to tell someone that they love and care about that they are driving you crazy? We have a lot of future plans for the band, and they involve all of us together.
