BEST PPO PUNK SONG OF 2019: "Summer Daze" - Performed By Numbers On Napkins

It's been nearly a decade since the West Phoenix based punk band, Numbers On Napkins, released a single. The last single that the band pushed was "Go Away", from the bands second full length album, "Borrachos, Chingasos Y Rucas", released in December of 2010 on Bad Stain Records. "Go Away" quickly became one of the bands most successful songs, partially due to the songs funny and creative music video. Despite the videos low quality, the pirate themed video caught the eye of the viewer, and the music caught their ears.

Numbers On Napkins latest full length release, "From Buckeye To Beardsley" hit stores in 2019, and was the first release from the band in nine years! NON chose the song "Summer Daze" as the albums first single, and the band released a video to accompany the song, made up of various live performances of the band throughout the years.

"Summer Daze" is possibly NON's strongest single since the bands very popular single, "Runaway", from NON's debut album, "Waiting for Tomorrow" in 2004. "Runaway" had much more commercial success after being put into rotation on 103.9, The Edge, a popular Phoenix radio station throughout the nineties and early 2000's. Still, "Summer Daze" has a familiar sound to it, with a catchy and poppy chorus, full of well executed melodic vocal harmonies.

"Keep it simple, stupid. That was the advice my Mom always gave me when I was trying to write a catchy song", said Chase Stain, bassist and primary vocalist for the band. "I was always trying to write something complex and fun to play, but my mom always told me that the majority of popular songs should be basic and simple, so that a novice can learn them and enjoy playing. Plus, the songs are simple, so they always sound perfect when played live. I took my mom's advice, but still like to throw in a complex riff now and then. Summer Daze is very simple, with a basic three chord verse, and basic three chord chorus. I think the bridge may have four or five chords though".

The music grabs your attention, but the lyrics are what really makes "Summer Daze" stand out above the rest in 2019. Chase Stain uses a somewhat obscure, yet poetic way to describe a beautiful girl named Summer, and goes on to explain how he gradually falls in love with Summer, over the course of a summer. Although the lyrics are somewhat hazy during the first two verses, I was able to somewhat interpret the song, and Stain uses obvious, but yet still well written lyrics in the final verse to help wrap up the song. "Summer Daze" is an impressive display of NON's writing capabilities, and shows both fans and critics that the band still has the creative drive to produce incredible songs, even after an extensive break. I'm excited to hear what NON throws our way next.
