#13 - Numbers On Napkins
Coming in at number thirteen on our list is the infamous, Numbers On Napkins. NON didn’t seem to have a super powerful presence in the local scene this year, mainly playing as an opening act for assorted touring bands, although the band did finally release their long awaited second full length, “Borrachos, Chingasos, Y Rucas”.
NON had spent the past three years negotiating with several independent record labels, and even a couple well established major labels, including Universal Records and Island Records. In the end, the bands new full length was released on Bad Stain Records, the same label that released the bands debut full length, as well as two of the bands EP’s.
NON’s latest release hit the streets just a few weeks ago, in late December, and features twelve new tracks, produced by Joe Queer, of the Ramones influenced punk band, The Queers. Many tracks like, “Ten Years Ago Today” and “Say Goodbye” still maintain that classic NON style of bright and energetic pop punk, while other tracks like, “Forget This, I’m Going to Tokyo” and “Go Away”, show the progressive side of the band, and how much they have grown. Track seven on the album is a true masterpeice! “Ode to the Drink” is an acoustic track with a simple chord progression, played in a very folk style, with lyrics about drinking after work at the bar. Vocalist, Chase Stain, sings the song using an Irish accent, and when everything is put together, you have an end result that was totally amazing and unexpected.
In 2010, NON impressed the scene with a new album that featured a unique style that nobody expected, and managed to share the stage with several talented bands and musicians. It’s clear to see that they are more than ready for 2011!
